Five youths were arrested when they beat up several Marines on a Southern California pier over Memorial Day weekend after the Marines told them to stop setting off fireworks.
Four boys and one girl, whose names and ages were not released, were arrested Tuesday, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said. They were committed to the Orange County Juvenile Correctional Facility for assault with a deadly weapon (not a firearm), authorities said. A sheriff sergeant said the guns were their feet as these victims lay on the ground.
Investigators used video to track the teens and worked with a local school district to match the images to school records, CBS Los Angeles reported.
“In this day and age, you get caught — people are going to record it,” San Clemente Mayor Chris Duncan told the broadcaster. “I hope this serves as a lesson to the young people in the community so they don’t get out of hand when something like this happens.”
The case came to light after video showed a group of up to 30 teenagers and young adults beating several Marines on Friday night.
It happened at San Clemente Pier, authorities said. The Marines were treated for minor injuries to their hands, knees, abdomen and head and refused to go to a hospital, officials said.
Hunter Antonino, one of the Marines attacked, told CBS Los Angeles that the crowd set off fireworks. When debris hit him in the face, he urged the group to move on, the station reported.
“They set off firecrackers, they were aggressive, they were obnoxious and they annoyed other people, so I walked up to them and told them to stop,” he told the broadcaster.
A teenager punched the victim in the back of the head. When the Marine turned and charged at his attacker, the crowd began to move, he told the station.
In the video, the Marines can be seen on the ground trying to protect themselves as the group punches and kicks them.
It ended when a man and woman told the group to stop, the channel reported.
