A murder investigation was launched in a posh Hampshire town today after a young woman was arrested in the death of a woman in her 40s at a detached red brick property.
The 25-year-old is being questioned by investigators on suspicion of murdering the elderly woman at the Petersfield address.
Police cars, ambulances and a helicopter landed in the town, which is surrounded by the Hampshire countryside, around 8pm last night. The victim, in her 40s, who could not be identified, was found dead at the property, which is divided into several apartments.
When Hampshire Constabulary began investigating today, a white forensic tent had been set up in the property’s pretty front garden, covering the ground floor window.
Two police officers and three forensic technicians in white coveralls were seen in the garden, which is surrounded by a brick wall and green bushes.

Locals in the upmarket town of Petersfield, Hampshire, revealed they had heard “terrible screams”.
A police spokeswoman said: “We were called to an address on Station Road just before 8pm on May 9th. Upon arrival, police discovered the body of a 40-year-old woman. A formal identification has not yet taken place.
“The woman’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by professionals.”
“As part of our investigation, a 25-year-old woman from Bordon [Hants] was arrested on suspicion of murder. She is currently in custody.’
Detective Chief Inspector Emma Crute said: “We would be interested to hear from any potential witnesses who may have seen or heard anything on Station Road between 3pm and 8pm yesterday.”

A nearby homeowner in her 40s said, “I heard sirens, then I heard a woman scream.” After hearing the screams, I looked over the wall and saw a black, unmarked police car there.
The man added, “There are apartments over there.” To be honest, everyone seems quite friendly. Nobody seems unsympathetic or anything like that. It’s a bit of a shock.’
One pensioner said she heard a commotion, adding: “It’s scary to imagine that’s what happened here.”
Another neighbor, a homeowner in her 50s, said she left her house last night and discovered a huge police line.
She said, “The blue lights were still flashing when I tried to go to bed. ‘Whatever happened there must have been awful.’
Petersfield has been called the home of famous people such as Mark Owen and Miranda Hart.
