Convicted double murderer and disgraced attorney Alex Murdaugh admitted to other financial crimes Monday in response to a long-running lawsuit in federal court.
That lawsuit, filed in April 2022, has to do with allegations that Murdaugh lied about certain details surrounding the death of his former housekeeper in 2018. Gloria Satterfield, 57, worked as the Murdaugh family’s housekeeper for over two decades. She allegedly died on February 26, 2018 in what was then the hunting lodge of the Mosel family in a so-called “tripping and falling accident”. After her death, Murdaugh asserted legal responsibility and sued himself for lucrative insurance proceeds from the dead woman’s family.
Only this money never reached her heirs. Murdaugh admittedly bagged around $4.3 million in insurance claims. An admission of judgment was filed by Murdaugh in June 2022 – in which he admitted stealing the settlement money from Gloria Satterfield’s sons, Tony Satterfield and Brian Harriott.

In the present lawsuit, Nautilus Insurance Company sought an explanation of its rights in response to news that Murdaugh had not truthfully disclosed the circumstances of his housekeeper’s death in order to reach a speedy and favorable settlement.
“Starting in July 2021 and during the filing of this lawsuit, Nautilus first became aware of facts relating to Satterfield’s claims, allegations of insurance fraud, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud and allegations of criminal conduct,” the lawsuit reads.
In his eight-page response, Murdaugh admits that he was the one who, according to the complaint, “contacted the Satterfield family after the death of Gloria Satterfield and proposed that they sue him and have him withdrawn from his insurance companies, including Nautilus.” collect.”
He also admits that after the fall, he falsely claimed that regarding the complaint, “Ms. Satterfield briefly regained consciousness, during which time she explained that Murdaugh’s dogs had tripped her. This statement was not heard by anyone else and is contradicted by Ms Satterfield’s later statement to hospital staff that she had no idea what brought her down.”
“No dogs were involved in the fall of Gloria Satterfield on February 2, 2018,” Murdaugh’s response read. “Following Ms. Satterfield’s death, the defendant fabricated Ms. Satterfield’s alleged testimony that dogs caused her fall in order to force his insurers to make a settlement payment, and stated that she was not on the property to do work.”
While admitting his lies, Murdaugh responds by saying that he “denies the existence of any conspiracy to wrongfully induce Nautilus to pay a fraudulent claim.”
Others allegedly involved in the conspiracy include Cory Fleming, Chad Westendorf, Palmetto State Bank and Moss & Kuhn, PA
Murdaugh has said time and time again – including during his testimony at his double murder trial – that he has acted alone in countless money thefts from various clients and organizations over the years.
At least one federal judge dealing with the appeal of one of Murdaugh’s convicted co-conspirators has given little weight to the convicted double murderer’s claims that he was a lone financial criminal.
Russell Laffitte, the former CEO of Palmetto State Bank, had hoped these sworn testimonies would work to his advantage. A jury convicted him of six separate financial crimes in November 2022.

“Murdaugh is obviously not a credible witness. Evidence presented during the defendant’s trial established without a doubt that Murdaugh is a serial liar and fraudster who stole from his clients and legal partners,” US District Judge Richard Mark Gergel wrote last month in an order in which he rejected the request for a new trial. “He is now convicted of the double murder of his wife and son. In these circumstances, it is difficult to imagine a less credible witness.”
