Anthony Albanese wears South Sydney Rabbitohs socks at the coronation of King Charles

Anthony Albanese has shown his undying support for the South Sydney Rabbitohs by appearing at the coronation of King Charles III. put on a pair of team socks.

The Prime Minister had to miss his favorite team’s Magic Round win over the Melbourne Storms on Saturday night because he had to be in London for the historic event.

Photos showed Mr Albanese in a navy blue suit and speckled red tie outside Westminster Abbey alongside his partner Jodi Haydon and other world leaders.

As he left, flashes of green and red – the team’s signature colors – could be seen around his ankles.

South Sydney chief executive Blake Solly said it was a sign of “Albo’s true passion for our club”.

“He’s a Rabbitoh through and through,” Mr Solly told News Corp on Sunday.

“Hopefully our achievements make the club proud and wearing these socks on such an important occasion makes us very proud too.”

The Prime Minister’s passion for the club dates back some 20 years, when he was one of 80,000 South Sydney Rabbitohs supporters who took to the streets of Sydney to protest their exclusion from the newly formed NRL competition.

He also famously stood in Parliament in 1999 and tabled a number of motions including asking the NRL to include South Sydney in the 2000 competition.

“Like the working-class people who support them, South Sydney has always paid their way,” he said.

“Unlike teams like Melbourne and Cronulla who would be insolvent without News Limited.

“And people from that proud tradition know how to fight, in Parliament, on the streets and in court.

Mr. Albanese still regularly wears his weather-beaten scarf and battered vintage Rabbitohs jersey.

He was joined at Saturday’s coronation by fellow Australian singer Nick Cave, comedian Adam Hills, former Foreign Secretary Julie Bishop and Matilda’s captain Sam Kerr – who was Australia’s flag bearer.

King Charles, 74, automatically assumed the throne after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September last year.

At Saturday’s coronation, he and Queen Consort Camilla will be officially crowned by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.
