According to the UN, at least 40 civilians have been killed within three days in attacks by armed groups in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Aid (OCHA) said on Tuesday that people were killed in attacks near the town of Bunia in Ituri province.
In total, more than 600 civilians have been killed in Ituri this year and around 345,000 people have been displaced. “We condemn in the strongest terms this violence and call on all parties to abide by international humanitarian law and human rights,” the UN office said.
The resource-rich Democratic Republic of the Congo has been plagued by armed militias for decades. Attacks on civilians are particularly common in Ituri province, which lies on the border with Uganda, and in North Kivu province.
