Barbie Monday Box Office sets Warner Bros. record

Come on Barbie, let’s make (more) box office history.

Greta Gerwig’s sculptural fantastical “Barbie” grossed $26 million Monday, making it the best Monday earnings in Warner Bros. history. The previous record was held by (wait for it) Christopher Nolan’s 2008 superhero epic The Dark Knight, which grossed $24.6 million (not adjusted for inflation).

Nolan, of course, has close ties to Barbie, as his latest film, R-rated period drama Oppenheimer, has the same release date as the very pink blockbuster. The contrast between the two films, which are auteur-directed and feature numerous high-profile actors, has fueled the phenomenon known as “Barbenheimer”.

“Oppenheimer” also enjoyed a large turnout on Monday, raising $12.6 million and taking its domestic balance sheet to $95 million.

“Barbie” also made the top 15 Mondays of all time without falling on a bank holiday weekend. The fantasy comedy, starring Margot Robbie as the famous doll, has grossed $188 million so far and is set to surpass $200 million immediately. “Barbie” has grossed $194.3 million at the international box office for a total of $382 million.

There’s more to come…
