Alarm in the middle of the ski jump: On Monday afternoon, an English dud from World War II was found here. Thousands of people are evacuated, the fire brigade’s explosive ordnance clearance service and the police are on duty until late at night. A partial detonation is planned, but there are problems: The defusing is more than difficult. The first attempt has to be aborted, a second one takes place early in the morning – the exit is open. It is already the second bomb that has to be defused in Hamburg in July.
The bomb was discovered at 3:16 p.m. on a construction site in Bartelsstrasse, not far from Sternschanze S-Bahn station near an underpass. According to the police, it is an English 500-pound bomb (about 225 kilos).
The residential area on Bartelsstrasse and Susannenstrasse was evacuated. The red flora was also affected. A blocking radius of 300 meters around the bomb has been set. Around 5000 people are registered here and had to leave their homes. Tim Mälzer’s popular restaurant “Bullerei” was also affected by the eviction, as the chef and entrepreneur announced on Instagram. A spokesman for the fire department confirmed this.
Residential buildings and Tim Mälzer’s restaurant cleared – roads and railways closed
Emergency accommodation for evacuees was available in the St. Pauli vocational school at Budapester Strasse 58. A citizen hotline has been set up and can be reached via the numbers (040) 4286 51609, (040) 4286 51604 and (040) 4286 51608.
The warning radius was 500 meters. So-called “air-raid protection behavior” applied here, which means that people are not allowed to leave their houses, keep windows and doors closed and stay in the building on the side facing away from the aerial bomb.

Bartelsstraße, Susannenstraße and other surrounding streets had to be closed – there were severe obstacles to car and bus traffic. According to the railway, the operation of the S-Bahn lines S11, S21 and S2 on the route via Dammtor, Sternschanze and Holstenstraße was discontinued. The S31 trains were used from Sternschanze and Dammtor as “evacuation trains” for everyone to use.

The evacuation measures lasted several hours. “Evacuating the amount of apartments in the mostly four- and five-storey old buildings is demanding and time-consuming,” said a police officer to MOPO in the late afternoon. The measures were only completed at 9:55 p.m. The airspace was also closed.
Problems: Defusing the bomb is delayed – loud bang expected
At around 10:30 p.m., explosives expert Ronald Weiler, head of the explosive ordnance clearance service, began defusing. “Currently, it can be assumed that there will be a harmless partial explosion and thus an audible bang,” said the police. But there were problems: The operation was more than difficult due to the special lying position of the dud.
Finally, the first attempt had to be aborted, as the fire brigade announced at 1:10 a.m. on Twitter. According to the police, additional work equipment was needed, which arrived around 2:30 a.m. and is now being prepared for use. Another attempt was made at 3:40 a.m. It was not clear at this point how long the defusing would take.
We will keep you informed about further developments at this point.
The defusing will now continue.

It is already the second dud within less than two weeks that was found in Hamburg. At the beginning of the month, a British aerial bomb was also discovered during exploratory work in Wilhelmsburg. Defusing it also proved difficult because, according to the Ordnance Disposal Service, the bomb was stuck in the ground upside down.
