When the European Championship 2024 starts in Germany (opening match: 14 June 2024), all ten venues will be renamed for the time of the tournament. One month before the start of the tournament, Uefa will take care of removing the namesake of the sponsors from the stadium facade.

Also in Dortmund. During this time, the letters of the Signal Iduna, which has acquired the naming rights of the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund since 2005, will not be visible there. Instead, the former Westfalenstadion is used during the European Championship as “BVB Stadium Dortmund” appear.

12 months to find the name

According to the “Kicker”, the naming process took a full twelve months. One of Uefa’s first suggestions was to use the traditional stadium names. In the end there were ten different stadium names without a uniform system.

The stadium names for the EM 2024:

  • Berlin: Olympic Stadium Berlin
  • Cologne: Cologne Stadium
  • Dortmund: BVB Stadium Dortmund
  • Dusseldorf: Dusseldorf Arena
  • Frankfurt: Frankfurt arena
  • Gelsenkirchen: Arena AufSchalke
  • Hamburg: Volkspark Stadium Hamburg
  • Leipzig: Leipzig Stadium
  • Munich: Munich soccer arena
  • Stuttgart: Stuttgart Arena

Only the Olympic Stadium in Berlin and the Volkspark Stadium in Hamburg have retained their names for the tournament. While the other names are made up of the city name and the additional arena or stadium, parts of the club names have only been used in Dortmund and Gelsenkirchen.

Among other things, according to the “Kicker”, because both stadiums benefit from the names and awareness of the football clubs. During an official Uefa tournament, the sponsors who have secured rights to the club’s stadium name are not allowed to use them.

Ex-BVB professional is ambassador

The ambassador for the city of Dortmund during the EM 2024 is ex-BVB professional Roman Weidenfeller together with the former German national soccer player Annike Krahn, who works as a consultant for the women’s soccer department of Borussia Dortmund.
