Can Joao Cancelo play for Bayern Munich against Man City in the quarter-finals of the Champions League?

Manchester City meet Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final first leg tonight and could be on a collision course with defender Joao Cancelo.

Cancelo fell out of favor at Etihad and moved to the Bundesliga in January until the end of the season.

Both clubs are among favorites to win the Champions League and meet live on talkSPORT at the Etihad tonight, which has led to questions as to whether the right-back will be included.

He started all but one of City’s games in the group stage and now hopes to be part of Bayern’s quest for European glory.

According to UEFA, clubs can register a maximum of three new players during the winter and it doesn’t matter if they’re already in the competition.

Cancelo played in both games in Bayern’s round of 16 win over Paris Saint-Germain.

Can Cancelo play against City?

Things get a little more complicated when it comes to whether he can play against City, but the Portugal international is eligible to play against his parent club.

City could have negotiated a special clause preventing the right-back from playing them, but they decided against it.

It means Cancelo, who has made 154 appearances for Man City since joining from Juventus, can play in either leg.

However, he has only completed 90 minutes once since moving to Germany and is not a guaranteed starter.

But if he finds a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad, the former Chelsea manager is hoping he can manage his emotions.

In his pre-match press conference, Tuchel said: “I hope he can handle his emotions and isn’t overly motivated, overexcited, but not too friendly and too shy.

“I know he’s looking forward to it.”
