A Maryland father-of-three was beaten to death in his front yard while protecting his children from a middle school brawl that spread to the family’s home in Anne Arundel County late last week, authorities say.
Christopher Michael Wright, 43, died in a hospital on Saturday from a traumatic brain injury.
The violence reportedly happened the day before.
At Brooklyn Park Middle School, Wright’s 14-year-old son got into a fight with another teenager on Friday afternoon and headed home, according to a report from the man’s family, which was leaked to Baltimore-based NBC affiliate WBAL.
School officials reportedly confirmed the fighting had started on campus and are cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation.
Wright’s fiancee, Tracy Karopchinsky, explained the horrifying events.
“Chris came out to tell them he’s not coming here to fight and at one point they threatened to come in and get him and then they said, ‘If he’s not going to fight, you will.’ fight,” she told WBAL. “If you just look at the damage done to him, it’s not just a punch that caused that. So there’s no way the beating caused that. The damage occurred before the ambulance even took him away. I mean he had a seizure. It was done. There was nothing the hospital could do.”
But police say it wasn’t just a teenager who followed the boy back to his home on Arundel Road West in Brooklyn. According to the Anne Arundel County Police Department, the suspects are three to four white men in their 20s and 30s.
“On May 19, 2023, at approximately 5:00 p.m., officers responded to a report of an assault that had just occurred,” the AACPD press release said. “The victim was taken to a trauma center in the area for treatment of a life-threatening injury. During their investigation, officers learned that suspects were arriving at the victim’s home in connection with a previous altercation. A physical altercation ensued, in which the victim suffered life-threatening injuries. At approximately 9:45 p.m. on May 20, 2023, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.”
Wright’s sister-in-law, Kristin Karopchinsky, gave a similar version of events in comments to Inside Edition this week.
“Two men and three middle school students came into the house to attack my nephew,” his sister-in-law said. “Chris died fighting to protect his son. He suffered a catastrophic brain injury and had no brain function when he got to the hospital.”
Kristin Karopchinsky is co-organizing a GoFundMe campaign for funeral expenses and the apparent costs of raising her children without Wright for the man’s grieving fiancé.
“Chris went outside to defend his son and was hit in the head and his head was repeatedly slammed onto the concrete, causing extensive brain damage,” the fundraiser reads. “These men took the life of a great father and life partner. He left this earth and those who loved him far too soon.”
A candlelight vigil in honor of Wright is planned for Friday.
Tracy Karopchinsky said the group attack was caught on the doorbell camera of a neighbor and the victim.
“I was on Shock Trauma and initially my dad and I tried to face the camera and the first video that comes out is of my 12-year-old son yelling ‘daddy, daddy, daddy’ and running out of the house on the street to help his father,” she told WBAL. “And after that, I couldn’t watch anymore. I just couldn’t.”
There were no arrests.
“Anyone who helped the prime suspect or the prime suspect or was an accomplice will be guilty,” Anne Arundel County Police Spokesman Marc Limansky told WBAL.
Wright is remembered as a devoted father, best friend to his fiancé, a man who watched the stars and had a knack for gardening.
“He was a friend to everyone,” Tracy Karopchinsky told local CBS affiliate WJZ. “I mean just the flood we got from friends and they’re really, really going to miss someone with a really big heart. He loved beyond that.”
The couple had been together for several years.
“Chris wanted a big, beautiful church wedding where everyone was present,” his fiancée told WJZ. “And I was the type of person who said, ‘Well, we’ve never been to Las Vegas.’ I thought we had time.”
