BERLIN. Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth (Greens) has called on artists in Germany to do more climate protection. “Art is free. But we have common issues and a common challenge,” the politician warned on Monday, according to Radio Bremen, in the Bremerhaven climate house.
“We know the pictures of glaciers in the Alps, which actually no longer exist.” Action must therefore also be taken in culture and the media, said the Minister of State for Culture at the “Green Culture” conference on the relationship between culture and climate protection.
This also includes dealing with your own CO2 footprint. However, Roth did not want to see this as an encroachment on artistic freedom. Artists have long since become sources of ideas themselves in the fight against climate change.
Bremen’s Senator for the Environment: The artists want help from politicians
Bremen’s environment senator Maike Schaefer (Greens) also emphasized the will of artists in this country to do more for climate protection. “It’s about supporting a free cultural scene according to the motto: ‘How can you better deal with the topic of climate protection in your area?'” said the senator.
“There is the will of the cultural scene to do more for climate protection, but that is not entirely trivial,” she explained the situation. In addition to Roth and Schaefer, the guests included the Parliamentary State Secretary in the Ministry of Economics and Michael Kellner (Greens). Topics discussed at the conference included sustainable tour organization or ways for creatives to measure their own environmental metrics.
“The aim of these conferences is to bring together representatives from culture, politics, administration, science and civil society to discuss and develop ideas and solutions,” said the organizers about the conference. (fw)
