Colorado boy injured in shark attack while in Mexico on spring break

AURORA, Colorado — A Colorado boy is recovering from a horrific shark attack during his spring break vacation in Mexico.

Denver7 spoke to 10-year-old Dillon Armijo, who says he was bitten by a shark on March 17 while visiting Cancun, Mexico.

“We were going to the beach and we were going to swim or jump in waves and then five minutes later it’s like a shark just got into a wave and just bit my leg,” Dillon said.

Dillon’s mother, Abby, said a man nearby, as well as a lifeguard and Dillon’s older brother, were able to pull him out of the water.

After spending four days in the hospital in Mexico, he was flown to Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora.

He had to undergo multiple surgeries, but Abby said he is walking again.

“We were very, very lucky that we were able to bring a medevac back to the United States and bring it here to do the last three surgeries. I think that’s given him such a great result, being back here at home with some fantastic doctors,” Abby added.

Dillon is done with all his surgeries and is expected to go home soon. He still has a long way of physical therapy ahead of him.

What has helped them get through this unexpectedly difficult time, the family said, is all the support they have received since returning home. Friends started a GoFundMe fundraiser to help them pay the unexpected medical bills.

“It’s nice to know that there are so many people here to help,” Abby said.

It’s that support that’s helping Dillon stay strong as he progresses in his recovery.

“He’s done fantastic considering what he’s been through,” added Abby.
