Actually, only the tugboats dance on the Elbe at the Hamburg Port Birthday. But this year it got a lot softer on the water. Hamburg’s ballet director John Neumeier also had a hand in this.
Hamburg (dpa/lno). When the sky is overcast, tugboats pirouette to classical music and Hamburg melodies, thousands of people watch enthusiastically – everything as always at the tugboat ballet for the harbor birthday. But if you took a closer look, you discovered the dancers of the National Youth Ballet in the port of Hamburg on Saturday. The ballet, founded in 2011 by John Neumeier, danced in maritime costumes on the largest of the boats to classic melodies such as “The Sailor’s Hornpipe” and created a birthday atmosphere with a dance to “Celebration”.
Four of the up to 3,500 horsepower (hp) tug boats had previously opened the ballet with the concert waltz “Wiener Blut” in front of the Landungsbrücken. The Cologne band “Cat Ballou” concluded the event with a surprise concert on one of the ships.
Every year, the tugboat ballet is one of the highlights and crowd pullers at the harbor birthday. Normally, the tugs ensure that regular operations in the port run smoothly. With their help, the up to 400 meter long container giants and other watercraft can be maneuvered safely in the port.
