Sheffield. Darts world champion Michael Smith is still unstoppable in the Premier League and is increasingly taking on the role of favorite two weeks before the grand final in London.
The “Bully Boy”, as Smith is called, won the 15th match day in Sheffield and thus already clinched the third day’s title in a row. With his victories over Michael van Gerwen (6:4) as well as Jonny Clayton (6:4) and Gerwyn Price (6:3) he also defeated the top three opponents in the table.
“I wasn’t at my best today. But courage and determination helped me to get the day’s win,” said the Englishman Smith. Next Thursday in Aberdeen is the last day of the preliminary round on the program. Price (36 points), Smith (33) and van Gerwen (31) have already qualified for the final in London on May 25th.
The fourth ticket is played by Welshman Clayton and Englishman Nathan Aspinall, who meet directly in the quarter-finals. While Clayton wins a direct duel, Aspinall would also have to reach the final after defeating the opponent. The Englishman Chris Dobey, the Belgian Dimitri van den Bergh and Scotland’s former world champion Peter Wright have already been eliminated.
