Music mogul and hip-hop producer Dr. Dre was eventually played by actor Corey Hawkins in the hit biopic feature Direct from Compton. Originally, one of Dre’s children had been considered for the role. But Dre would later veto the casting choice because of his son’s acting experience.
Curtis Young didn’t know he was Dr. Dre’s son was when he was growing up
Curtis Young is the eldest son of Dr. Dre’s seven children. But growing up, little did he know that his father was the hip-hop multi-millionaire. dr Dre was only 17 when his then-girlfriend, Joy Greene, was pregnant with Young. After Greene and Dre broke up, Young was raised by another man, whom Greene had dated weeks after Dre broke up.
Ironically, Young grew up a fan of hip-hop supergroup NWA. But he didn’t know that Dr. Dre was his father until Young’s stepfather revealed the secret during an argument with Greene.
“‘Do you want to know who your real daddy is? Your real father is Dr. Dre’,” Young recalled of his stepfather in an interview with NextShark.
Young’s stepfather didn’t want him to see Dr. met dre But eventually his stepfather and mother separated, giving Young a chance to bond with his birth father. After taking a DNA test to confirm the relationship, the two would eventually meet.
“It was like looking in the mirror and seeing him face to face. We first met at the Skybar in Hollywood. It really is indescribable. The best way to describe it is meeting your favorite basketball player or soccer player,” Young said. “Just in that moment it was epic. We sat down and couldn’t stop staring at each other.”

Young stressed that he would not ask for handouts from his father. Even after connecting with Dre, Young claimed he asked very little of the mega producer.
“I’m here to make it clear that I’m spoiled,” Young said. “That is definitely not the case. I don’t ask no s*** from my dad. I don’t want anything from my father. When I met him it was different. I was a child. He got me a car and some cash, but that was pretty much for my birthday. After that it was really just birthdays. I didn’t ask for alms,” Young said.
Young also carried this attitude with him when he tried to break into the film industry Direct from Compton. Direct from Compton followed the rise of NWA’s founding members with actors portraying the hip-hop legends that made up the group. Actor O’Shea Jackson portrayed his father Ice Cube in the hit 2015 film. Young wanted to duplicate that casting by also portraying his father Dr. Dre starred in the bio.
“I actually applied for the part because the casting company called me,” Young once told XXL. “But my dad wanted someone with more acting experience, and I haven’t acted in a long time, so I’m happy for the guy who got the part.”

Despite his father’s huge success, Young claimed that making a name for himself could be difficult at times.
“You can’t get out of this giant’s shadow. So I’m still in his shadow – and because of him I have the Young name and the Foundation – but what I understood was that he paved the way that I still have to walk, so I have to brand myself as an artist around understand that,” Young said.
Doing so required exploring avenues that did not involve Young’s father.
“And when I say that, I mean I have other entities besides music, so it kind of helped me stay out of his shadow because I have things he doesn’t do. Like he has the headphone thing, I have other things,” Young said.
