England’s World Cup hopes have suffered another blow as Fran Kirby, the youngest player in the tournament, was ruled out.
The Chelsea forward is set to undergo knee surgery that will see her sidelined for a “significant time”.
Kirby injured his knee in the Blues’ League Cup semi-final against West Ham in February and has not played since.
The striker, who started every Euro 2022 game, had received injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in hopes of avoiding surgery but was unable to solve the problem.
A statement from Kirby said: “Unfortunately after a few months of rehab the decision has been made that I will need surgery on my knee.

“I did my best not to undergo it but unfortunately my progress was limited due to the problem in my knee.
“I’m absolutely disappointed to announce that this means my season is over and I won’t be able to reach the World Championship in the summer.
‘I will do whatever it takes to be ready for the start of next season and would like to wish my Chelsea team-mates the best of luck for the rest of the season and my Lioness team-mates the best of luck for the summer.’
England have already lost captain Leah Williamson to an anterior cruciate ligament injury she sustained last month, while Beth Mead – who picked up the same injury in November – is also a doubt.
Lucy Bronze and Millie Bright have both recently had knee surgery but are expected to be fit in time for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand.
Kirby previously suffered from knee injuries, but these were successfully treated with PRP injections.

A statement from the club read: “Fran was checked at Cobham by the Chelsea medical team following an injury sustained during our Continental League Cup semi-final against West Ham.
“Following this review and further discussions with a specialist, Fran will undergo surgery and is expected to be sidelined for an extended period.
‘Fran will begin a rehabilitation program with the support of the club’s medical team. Everyone at Chelsea sends their best wishes to Fran on her recovery.
