Erdogan is clearly ahead again with German-Turks

Among the Turkish people who are entitled to vote in Germany, a clear majority for Recep Tayyip Erdogan is once again emerging in the presidential election. With almost 79 percent of the ballot boxes counted from Germany, the incumbent accounted for almost two-thirds of the votes, according to figures from the state news agency Anadolu on Monday. However, official figures from the electoral authorities are not yet available.

According to this interim figure, almost 65 percent of the votes in Germany went to Erdogan. Opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, on the other hand, only got just under 33 percent. Erdogan is likely to do much better in Germany than in the election overall: With 99 percent of the ballot boxes counted in Germany and around 84 percent abroad, according to the head of the electoral authority, Ahmet Yener, he has 49.40 percent of the votes . Kilicdaroglu comes to 44.96 percent. So a runoff on May 28 is the most likely scenario.

The picture in Germany is similar to that of the 2018 election. At that time, Erdogan had reached 64.8 percent among the German-Turks – and a total of 52.6 percent. Turks residing outside Turkey have been able to vote abroad since 2014.
