May is celebrated as Masturbation May, or more politically correct, National Masturbation Month. The special season was created in 1995 by sex shop Good Vibrations.

It was in response to Bill Clinton’s firing of Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders who believed that masturbation should be taught in schools as part of the curriculum. This is the 28thth year in which the celebration takes place.

Each year, Good Vibrations celebrates the news on its website and social media pages to continue educating the masses that touching yourself is perfectly normal.

Good Vibrations tells the story of Joycelyn Elder

Each year the company dedicates an item to Elders and their fruitful work. They describe them as:

“The first black woman in this role – for a simple and truthful statement about masturbation: When asked if she should be part of sex education curricula, given the urgent need for information on safe sex, she said that she should be something “that perhaps should be taught”.

While masturbation is less taboo these days, there is still a stigma surrounding masturbation. “So we need to talk about it, destigmatize it, learn about it, celebrate it! At Good Vibrations, our goal is to make masturbation fully acceptable to anyone who chooses to do it – and that’s what Masturbation Month has always been about! 💜.”

Plenty of celebs brag about self-pleasure

Luckily, Elders, Good Vibrations, and other sex advocates have celebs supporting their ideas by launching sex-related brands. Real Housewives of Atlanta Star Kandi Burruss has an entire podcast about sex. She has also created a range of sex toys. And she has an experience called “The Dungeon.” Oops!

Gwyneth Paltrow always hints at how much she enjoys her “alone time.” Her brand, Goop, continually promotes self-love, even dedicating an entire episode of her Netflix series to the female orgasm.

Cardi B continued WAP’s success with her own sex toy called Vush, the Majesty 2 vibrator. Dakota Johnson has teamed up with Maude to develop her vibrator and promote some of her best sellers.

It’s not just the month of May that these celebs focus on their sexual endeavors; Of course, Lala Kent, Charly Jordan and Kenya Moore have all promoted the sex toys they allegedly use on Instagram and Twitter; It’s an #ad but when May rolls around they’re going to take a much tougher approach.

The beginning of May has a lot of people excited and the overly sexual posts are making the rounds. “May has cum, and so should you” is a motto that has made the rounds so far. In addition, a calendar is doing the rounds that has a different masturbation technique every day.

There is a guide to hands-free masturbation technique for women.
