Former NYPD academy with active indoor firing range to house illegal migrants after city had ‘no other options’

A former New York Police Department (NYPD) training academy is being used to house hundreds of new illegal immigrants seeking asylum in New York after the city has reportedly reached its limit of available temporary migrant housing.

The migrants reportedly began moving into the facility in the early hours of Friday, just days after Gov. Greg Abbott, R-Texas, resumed sending buses carrying illegal immigrants to Democrat-run safe haven cities, including the Big Apple.

“Hundreds of asylum seekers arrived in New York City last night, after hundreds more arrived the day before and thousands more in the days and weeks prior. In the absence of a national solution to this national crisis, we are once again stepping up and developing our own decompression strategy,” Fabien Levy, press secretary for Mayor Eric Adams, told Fox News Digital on Friday.

While the former NYPD facility will reportedly only provide temporary housing for asylum seekers, law enforcement sources have raised safety concerns as some police officers still use an indoor shooting range in the building where the migrants are staying, according to the New York Post.

When asked what security measures would be in place at the academy, which was being converted into a refuge for migrants, a spokesman for the NYPD told Fox News Digital that “the department had made limited space available at one of its facilities for a short period of time to accommodate to assist the city in dealing with this emergency. As this is a police facility, we are taking all necessary steps to ensure on-site security.”

It’s unclear how long the migrants will reside in the former academy, but they are expected to stay for at least a week as the city struggles to manage the influx of migrants.

Levy echoed Adams’ repeated calls for state support to control the migrant crisis, alleging that activists are “abusing city and state laws and luring them here with false promises” as the city reaches the limit of shelters opening in the city can city.

“New York City single-handedly opened 122 shelters and eight major humanitarian aid centers in the last year. But we are now receiving reports that a network of activists is organizing a large-scale arrival of asylum seekers by plane, bus and other transportation to New York City – taking advantage of city and state laws and luring them here with false promises. ‘ Mayor Fox’s office said.

Levy also revealed that with hundreds of new migrants arriving in NYC just this week, the city has “reached our limit of new shelters to open. We currently have no option other than to temporarily accommodate newcomers in gyms.”

The new housing adds to the growing list of buildings, hotels and facilities in New York City that are being converted into migrant camps to house illegal immigrants at taxpayer expense.

Adams has repeatedly referred to the ongoing situation as a “crisis” and recently blamed the “irresponsibility of the White House” and “the Republican Party in Washington” for the nearly 60,000 illegal migrants who have moved to the city.

“We’ve been asking for support for a year,” Levy told Fox. “And now, as Title 42 is lifted next week, and hundreds of asylum seekers are already arriving in New York City every day, more than ever we need federal and state support to get through this crisis quickly.”

According to a memo from the New York City Office of Management and Budget, the Big Apple alone will cut an estimated $4.2 billion in migrant-related costs by the end of fiscal 2024 as they continue to seek assistance from the Biden administration.
