Freiburg’s soccer players are outsiders in the final of the DFB Cup. However, one player has already played her way into the squad of the German national team – in her job she goes on patrol.
Cologne. The soccer players of SC Freiburg in the DFB Cup final against VfL Wolfsburg rely on a policewoman as a possible frightening favourite. National player Janina Minge goes on patrol in her job, on Thursday (4.45 p.m. / ARD and Sky) in Cologne the 23-year-old hopes for a surprise against the nine-time cup winner.
Minge recalled the 2019 final, when SC only lost 1-0 to VfL. “The result still annoys me. We saw then that everything was in there. If we still have a bit of luck on our side, I’m sure we can win the game,” she said before the game.
The DFB has so far sold 42,000 of the 44,808 tickets for the final and is hoping for a full Rhein-Energie Stadium – it has long been a record attendance for the cup final. “It’s just a joy that we’re allowed to play in front of such an amazing crowd,” said Minge. “I think we can and want to enjoy it and get that one percent or two more out of it.”
European Championship title with the national police team
The Freiburg striker was already European champion with the German national police team and made her debut in February in the 0-0 draw in Duisburg against Sweden in the DFB selection of national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg.
“Janina is definitely an emotional leader for us, who tries to put in everything she has for 90 minutes,” said SC trainer Theresa Merk. “That’s something that’s extremely good for us – including their physical hardness and robustness.”
