The 2024 Georgia presidential primary is slated for March 12, despite pleas from top Democrats, including President Biden, to hold the election earlier in the nomination calendar to attract a more diverse group of voters.

The date was set by Republican Secretary of State for Georgia Brad Raffensperger, who is the only person in the state authorized to set Georgia’s primary date.

Raffensperger argued that Democrats had never approached him specifically on the matter, according to an Associated Press report, adding, “If you want to get most things done in America, sometimes you have to build a consensus and get both sides of the.” Ganges.”

In February, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) voted to change its 2024 presidential nomination calendar, ousting Iowa and New Hampshire from their longstanding leadership positions.

The party says the push is intended to offer black and Hispanic voters more exposure at the top of the schedule in a party that has become more diverse in recent decades.

New Hampshire strongly opposed the decision because the state is holding the first White House primary in a century.

Under Biden’s plan, South Carolina would hold its primary on February 3, 2024, while New Hampshire and Nevada would hold primary three days later and would support the idea of ​​Georgia holding its primary on February 13 and Michigan two weeks later.

But after Raffensperger’s decision, Raffensperger rejected the DNC’s proposal to reduce the influence of Iowa and New Hampshire, both of which are mostly white states, the AP reported.

Raffensperger said he had no desire to authorize separate primaries for each party or jeopardize the votes of the Georgian delegation at a national party congress.

DNC HOLDS 2024 CONVENTION IN CHICAGO

This is the second hit passed to the DNC.

Last month, the party announced it would host the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, disappointing the Georgia Democrats after Atlanta was in the running as a finalist.

Although local officials considered Atlanta a favorite, Biden opted to hold the convention in Chicago.

Raffensperger’s decision to hold the March 12 primary moves Georgia’s voting day just a week after Super Tuesday on March 5.
