Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said his state is taking border security into its own hands after pleas to the Biden administration went unanswered.
In a video shared on Twitter late Monday night, the Republican governor showed border agents in Brownsville, Texas, laying barbed wire across a gap in the border previously exposed for migrants attempting to enter the United States from Mexico.
“This is one thing Texas is doing to secure the border,” Abbott wrote. “This is the area near Brownsville that was crossed in large numbers by migrants a few days ago.”
In the video, the person carrying the camera and a flashlight walks briskly along the border and pans over to show hundreds of feet of spiral wiring. In some areas, the wiring is stacked to create a partition several feet high.

Abbott added, “We’ve wired it up now. Other areas will appear to traverse. We will also wire them.”
“There’s more to come,” promised the governor of Texas.
Barbed wire appears to be little deterrent to those seeking to enter the US illegally. Photos and videos at different points of the border show migrants crossing barbed wire by covering sharp edges with blankets and clothing.

The spiked barricade comes because the Biden administration failed to allocate congressional funds approved under the Trump administration to bolster border security.
Several border states have complained that the federal government has also failed to assist them in plugging critical gaps in areas along the border.

Border crossings have escalated in recent weeks and migrants have gathered by the thousands near various sections of the wall, including in El Paso, as they wait for Title 42 to expire on Thursday.
Title 42 is a public health order signed under former President Donald Trump in 2020, and its expiration is expected to give way to a wave of migrants.

The order gave border officials the power to refuse or relocate migrants due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The White House recently said it would veto a border enforcement bill passed by the majority of the Republican House that would limit asylum requests and erect a physical border wall.
“Biden opposes border security laws,” Abbott tweeted Monday.

He added: “Over the past two years, #OperationLoneStar has helped bridge the dangerous gaps created by Biden’s open borders policy. Biden has halted or rescinded every effective border security strategy.”
“As he finishes Title 42 on Thursday, Texas will continue our historic response to this crisis,” the Texas Republican said.

Alongside the number of migrants crossing the border, Abbott and Republicans in border states have railed against the spread of the deadly fentanyl, which enters the United States primarily from Mexico.
Over 385 million fatal cans have been seized by border officials in the past two years alone as part of Texas’ Operation Lone Star.
