In February last year, neighbors of an apartment in Harburg witnessed a serious argument: a man beat his girlfriend of the same age and seriously injured her. Since then, the woman has been in a coma. As of Monday, the alleged perpetrator is in court.
The 52-year-old has to answer to the Hamburg district court for serious and dangerous bodily harm.
Woman attacked in Phoenix neighborhood
This happened: On the morning of February 20, 2022, the police drove to a residential building on Straight Street in the Phoenix district of Harburg. Neighbors report how they heard a woman scream in pain and loud rumbling before the noise suddenly stopped. As it turned out later, the man is said to have severely abused the then 51-year-old and even hit her with pieces of furniture.
According to the indictment, the drunk man finally choked the woman until she lost consciousness. It was only when she was lying motionless in bed that he is said to have dialed the emergency call to the fire brigade himself.
The victim has been in a coma since the act
The woman’s injuries were so severe that she initially had to be treated on site. She was then taken to a hospital. She has been in a coma since the crime, suffering from a craniocerebral trauma.

It’s apparently the sad climax of a toxic relationship. In 2015 and 2017, similar violent crimes are said to have occurred between the arrested man and his partner. This time, too, the couple is said to have argued for a period of several days. They can’t get rid of each other, say the neighbors, who have witnessed the drama for years. But it has probably never been as brutal as this time.
