Hollywood’s relief at Prince Harry’s coronation visit

Harry and Meghan’s commercial status is at a tipping point in America, say Hollywood insiders – who warn the couple’s celebrity status is beginning to wane.

Prince Harry’s belated announcement that he would attend his father’s coronation next month was warmly welcomed in Los Angeles – not least because the Sussexes’ currency depends on him remaining seen as an active member of the royal family.

“Harry is going back for all the right reasons, but we were clearly relieved because Brand Sussex is counting on Harry being seen with his family,” a Netflix source said.

“Ultimately, it’s about being close to the king.”

Harry, fifth in line to the throne, is only expected to attend the coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey on the morning of May 6 before returning to California.

However, The Mail on Sunday has been told he will be allocated a seat at the post-coronation lunch if he decides to go there too.

Meghan will spend May 6 hosting son Archie’s fourth birthday at the couple’s £11.75million villa in Montecito, and Harry is determined to return home to enjoy the celebrations later in the day – one Plan that the eight hour time difference should allow.

Meanwhile, speculation is intense in Hollywood about the couple’s next moves and how they will continue to generate the lucrative financial deals needed to fund their lifestyle.

The Sussexes signed a £120million deal with streaming giant Netflix after ‘Megxit’ and also have multimillion-pound deals with publishers Penguin Random House and Spotify. Harry is reportedly making up to £500,000 a time speaking.

In 2019, the Duke was also famously filmed asking Disney boss Bob Iger at the London premiere of The Lion King, “You know her [Meghan] does voice over?’ The Duchess later narrated a documentary about elephants for the company.

A Walt Disney Studios executive told The MoS: “What Harry and Meghan do next is the $64,000 question that everyone in Hollywood is asking.

“They’re at a turning point because they did the Netflix series and Harry did his book. One could argue that the bloom of the rose gradually begins to fade. What’s your currency? Her main selling point is her connection to the royal family.

“Harry has to be there [at the Coronation]. In America, it’s all part of the narrative. Harry has to go back and either gets a hug, which is wonderful, or he doesn’t – which will keep the narrative going.

“The story needs to evolve because that’s what builds the brand and brings in the offerings.”

The executive added: “The danger Harry and Meghan face becomes irrelevant. Americans care about the royal family. We’ve always been fascinated by the royals. Harry is Diana’s son, nothing will change that.

“But the American public needs to see that he’s still part of the family because we care about his family and their drama.”

The MoS is aware that Meghan has agreed to release a second series of her award-winning Archetypes podcast on Spotify, although this is yet to be announced. She’s also reportedly working on a book as part of the couple’s deal with Penguin Random House – the company behind Harry’s controversial memoir Spare.

PR expert Eric Schiffer of Reputation Management Consultants said: “Harry is going there [to the Coronation] is a smart move on both a personal and brand level.

“He was a master at merchandising and marketing his royal lineage. Being missing from a big family event dilutes his mark.

“Not going won’t hurt Meghan’s brand. Most people in the US don’t care if she does or not.

“But for Harry, his whole brand relevance revolves around being close to the king. So he’s doing it for all the right and honorable reasons – but there’s definitely a huge benefit to his brand.”

Last night, a source said senior officials at Buckingham Palace were hoping Harry might still decide to attend the post-coronation lunch.

“A place will be set for him at the table. He is not expected to stay after the coronation procession, but palace staff are counting on him just in case.

The Netflix source added: “The images from the coronation will be instantly iconic. Harry will be in these photos and from a business perspective, that’s priceless.”
