“I still don’t understand why”

Midfielder Matheus Araújo protested after being expelled in the final stretch of Corinthians’ 2-1 victory against Universitario, this Tuesday. After widespread confusion occurred on the lawn due to Ryan’s celebration, the 21-year-old midfielder was expelled from the field by referee Wilmar Roldan, as well as other athletes.

After Ryan’s goal, some Universitario players attacked the midfielder, who took off his shirt in celebration and held it out to the local crowd. Afterwards, the athletes from the Peruvian team faced stadium police, while the Timão players were “stuck” on the bench.

After the weather softened, Wilmar Roldan opted to expel Ryan and Matheus Araújo, from Corinthians, and Calcaterra and Benedetto, from Universitario. At no time did the images capture Araújo involved in the conflict in question, which generated strangeness among fans and the athlete himself, which was manifested on social networks.

“I had no other face to show my reaction to my unfair expulsion. The images show that I never took part in the fight, I went precisely to the midfield to escape it, I am against any type of violence and nothing, absolutely nothing would justify such savagery. I still do not understand the reason for my expulsion. I have the impression that some were chosen anyway to receive a red. Happy for the result but outraged by the shame that happened tonight! I do not defend violence and I do not defend racists either !! This is Corinthians !!”, wrote the player in the Instagram.

The climate in Lima was tense. Upon arrival of the Corinthians delegation at the Monumental, a number of Universitario fans imitated the sound of a monkey towards the Timão players.

The Universitario fans’ idea was to create a climate of “rematch” due to the preventive detention of Sebastian Avellino, a physical trainer accused of having made racist gestures towards Corinthians in the first leg.

Matheus Araújo came on during the break of the game against Universitario, replacing Ruan Oliveira. Now, the athlete will be missing for the first leg against Newell’s Old Boys, from Argentina, for the round of 16 of the tournament.
