Aggravated charges have been filed against an Idaho man after he allegedly fractured the skull of a week-old girl.
Kade Michael Jones, 25, was arrested Wednesday and posted $250,000 bail at a court hearing the next day. EastIdahoNews.com reported that he was also given a no-contact order for the victim should he post bail.
The incident happened on May 11 when workers at the Community Hospital in Idaho Falls alerted police to an infant suffering from a fractured skull, bruising and swelling. The little girl was flown to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, where her current condition is unknown.
According to the police report, the baby’s doctor in Idaho Falls told a detective that the parents, Jones and his wife, said, “The only thing that came to mind that could have caused this injury was that their two-year-old daughter was kicked (the baby) in the head as he got up off the couch.” However, the doctor said he was not sure if a kick to the head of a two-year-old could have caused the damage seen in the infant.
The detective traveled to Salt Lake City, where his parents told him the same story. The detective saw the child and said he had “a major swollen area on the right side of the skull above the ear.”
Jones told the detective that he had noticed the swollen area a few days earlier, but the couple decided to delay medical care until a regular check-up. This investigation prompted her to take the little girl to the hospital.
During a second interview, Jones told investigators that he put the baby on the floor to change her diaper and that he “slapped her on the side of the head with his right hand” because she was crying. Jones blamed “possibly sensory overload” and said he “hit the baby harder than he wanted to” out of anger.
He said he didn’t see any bruises when he finished changing his diaper.
Jones has scheduled a preliminary hearing for June 8 and faces up to 15 years in prison and a $50,000 fine if convicted.
