Is Jamie Raskin Sick?
On Wednesday, Rep. Jamie Raskin, a key member of the Jan. 6 committee and a former Trump impeachment manager, shared that he has been diagnosed with cancer. Raskin, who is 60 years old, disclosed that he has Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma, a serious but treatable form of cancer. He plans to undergo chemo-immunotherapy on an outpatient basis and hopes to continue working during this period. However, his doctors have advised him to limit unnecessary exposure to viruses like COVID-19 and the flu. Raskin’s fellow Democrats have elected him to be the ranking member on the Oversight and Reform Committee in the upcoming Congress. He has stated that the prognosis for most people in his situation is excellent after four months of treatment.
What Kind of Cancer Does Jamie Raskin Have?
On December 28, U.S. Representative Jamie Raskin from Maryland announced that he had been diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, which is a treatable but serious form of cancer that tends to grow quickly. The usual treatment involves chemotherapy combined with a four-drug regimen administered in cycles every three weeks. Despite the challenges he may face, Raskin remains optimistic. In jest, he mentioned the possibility of experiencing hair gain and weight loss from his treatment, despite the common side effects of hair loss and weight gain. This is not Raskin’s first experience with cancer. He previously underwent radiation and chemotherapy for Stage III colon cancer in 2010, and in 2021, he discovered a benign cyst during an MRI. Since 2017, Raskin has served as the U.S. representative for Maryland’s 8th congressional district.
Why is Jamie Raskin Wearing a Headscarf?
Congressman Raskin’s positive outlook in the face of his cancer diagnosis has garnered support from many, including Steve Van Zandt, a member of the E Street Band and former cast member of The Sopranos. Van Zandt sent Raskin some of his own headscarves, which the congressman expressed gratitude for in a tweet. While some critics on Twitter have suggested that hair loss should not be an issue for a man, medical professionals have pointed out that chemo can cause tenderness to the scalp and sores, in addition to hair loss. Wearing a headscarf can help protect against these issues and regulate body temperature, which can be affected by chemo. It is worth noting that this is not Raskin’s first experience with cancer, as he overcame colon cancer in 2011. As he continues his battle, Raskin has demonstrated resilience and positivity.
