“Call the Midwife” is a British period drama series produced by the BBC. The show follows the story of a group of nurse midwives who work in the deprived East End of London during the late 1950s and 1960s. “Call the Midwife” is a BBC period drama series that revolves around newly qualified midwife Jenny Lee, as well as the midwives and nuns of Nonnatus House, a nursing convent that is part of an Anglican religious order. The show is set in the 1950s in the impoverished Poplar district of London’s East End. The series follows the Sisters and midwives as they provide nursing care across the community, with their primary focus being safe childbirth and newborn care, given that between 80 and 100 babies are born each month in Poplar alone. The first season, set in early 1957, deals with the issues of the “Baby Boom,” post-war immigration, and poverty in the East End.
The second season, set in 1958, introduces gas and air as a form of pain relief and tackles issues such as unexploded ordnance, an outbreak of tuberculosis, and a baby born with spina bifida. The third season, set in 1959, depicts cystic fibrosis, polio, caring for the terminally ill, and midwifery in a prison context.Subsequent seasons continue to explore social and medical issues of the time, such as the Child Migrants Programme, nuclear warfare, LGBT rights, syphilis among sex workers, the effects of thalidomide, domestic violence, mental health, interracial marriage, female genital mutilation, and more. The show introduces a recurring character with Down syndrome named Reggie in the sixth season, and Nurse Lucille Anderson becomes the first major character of color in the seventh season.
“Call the Midwife” follows a yearly format, with each season covering a specific year. The show’s tenth season is set in 1966. However, the Christmas special episodes take viewers to various locations, such as a mission in South Africa, the Outer Hebrides, and an orphanage managed by the religious order.
