Ivan Toney Banned, Why Did Ivan Toney Get Banned?

Who is Ivan Toney?

Ivan Benjamin Elijah Toney, born on March 16, 1996, is an English professional footballer who currently plays as a striker for Brentford in the Premier League and the England national team. Toney started his career at Northampton Town, making his first-team debut in 2012 and becoming the club’s youngest-ever player.

He scored 13 goals in 60 appearances across various competitions before moving to Newcastle United in 2015. During his time at Newcastle, he had successful loan spells at Barnsley, where he won the 2015-16 Football League Trophy and the 2016 League One play-offs.

Toney then went on loan to Shrewsbury Town, Scunthorpe United, and Wigan Athletic in League One. In terms of international recognition, Toney received his first call-up to the England national team in 2022 and made his debut in 2023.

Ivan Toney Banned

Brentford’s striker, Ivan Toney, has received an eight-month ban from football due to breaching betting rules, as announced by the English Football Association. Additionally, he has been fined £50,000 and cautioned about his future behavior regarding the FA’s Betting Rules.

The FA statement confirmed that Ivan Toney has been suspended from all football-related activities until January 16, 2024. The charges against him involved a total of 262 breaches of FA Rule E8, which occurred between February 25, 2017, and January 23, 2021. Ultimately, 30 of these breaches were withdrawn, while Toney admitted to the remaining 232.

Following a personal hearing, an independent Regulatory Commission imposed the sanctions on Toney. Ivan Toney will be permitted to resume training with his club for the last four months of his suspension, beginning on September 17, 2023.

Why Did Ivan Toney Get Banned?

Brentford striker Ivan Toney received an eight-month ban from football, effective immediately, after admitting to 232 breaches of the FA’s betting rules. The ban will last until January 16, 2024, and he has also been fined £50,000. However, it’s important to note that the ban applies only to English football, meaning Toney would not be allowed to go on loan to a foreign club during his suspension.

Toney admitted guilt to a significant number of the 262 gambling charges issued by the FA, while contesting others. The ban has already begun and will include the summer months, keeping Toney out of action until January 2024. The suspension also extends to England national team call-ups, meaning he will be ineligible to participate in international football.

The FA issued a statement indicating that Toney has been suspended from all football-related activities, including training, matches, and any involvement in football, and he has also received a warning about his future conduct regarding betting rules.

What Happened to Ivan Toney?

Ivan Toney, the professional footballer who played for Scunthorpe and Wigan on loan from Newcastle before joining Brentford permanently in 2020, has been involved in a disciplinary incident. After an investigation, an independent panel determined that Ivan Toney had violated FA Rule E8 on 232 occasions from February 2017 to January 2021. Consequently, he received an eight-month ban from football.

Toney’s ban began in May 2023 and will continue until January 16, 2024. This sanction was imposed due to his involvement in 232 breaches of the Football Association’s betting rules. Prior to his ban, Toney had made significant contributions to Brentford’s performance, including scoring 20 goals that helped the team achieve a successful top-half finish. After serving his suspension, Toney will be eligible to return to football activities.

Why was Ivan Toney Suspended?

On Wednesday, the English Football Association (FA) announced the suspension of Brentford striker Ivan Toney from all football-related activities for a period of eight months. Toney faced charges for a total of 262 breaches that occurred between February 2017 and January 2021, during his time as a player at Scunthorpe United, Wigan Athletic, Peterborough United, and Brentford.

ESPN reported in March that the 27-year-old Ivan Toney had acknowledged his violation of FA rules pertaining to betting prior to his appearance before a disciplinary panel. The FA statement confirmed that Toney has been suspended with immediate effect for eight months, until January 16, 2024.

Out of the 262 charges initially brought against him, 30 were subsequently withdrawn, while Toney admitted to the remaining 232. During the final four months of his suspension, starting from September 17, 2023, he will be permitted to resume training only with his club. The FA will publish the written reasons for these sanctions in due course, and they will wait to review them before making further comments.

In September, Ivan Toney received a call-up to the England squad but did not make an appearance. As a result, he was not included in Gareth Southgate’s final 26-man group for the World Cup finals in November. However, he made his international debut in March this year during England’s Euro 2024 qualifying win over Ukraine. Despite the suspension, Toney has shown impressive form this season, scoring 21 goals in all competitions.
