Joe Swash has credited reality TV with restoring his confidence after feeling “lost” following his exit from BBC soap opera EastEnders.
The actor and presenter spent five years playing the affable guy Mickey Miller on Albert Square, but the character was finally axed in 2008 — and Swash was safe.
And he admits his subsequent appearance in the eighth season of “I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!”. — which he would later win — gave him a renewed sense of purpose.
On Wednesday’s Loose Women, 41-year-old Swash revealed his success on the show – after which he quickly established himself as a TV star – and also served as the catalyst for his recent appearance on the all-star show I’m A Celebrity” … South Africa.
He said, “It was one of those things.” I thought the chapter was closed, and then they asked me about the spin-off show and South Africa.

Old days: The actor and presenter spent five years in Albert Square as the affable spy Mickey Miller, but the character was finally axed in 2008 — and Swash was left in limbo

Tears: Swash admits he was “emotional” during his second appearance on I’m A Celeb because he missed his family
“When I think of the jungle, I think of him as a person.” When I left EastEnders I was a little lost and that gave me so much confidence. It all comes from the jungle.”
The Cockney star admitted it was his fiancée Stacey Solomon who pushed him to take part in the South African series because “she knew how much” it meant to him.
But her blessing didn’t stop father-of-four Swash from cracking down in front of his roommates while discussing his family – an emotional display that mirrored his first appearance on the series.
“I was a bit disappointed that I was so emotional,” he explained. “The first time I was in it much longer. Leaving her was a big deal.
“The first time I only had my eldest son Harry and I only saw her on the weekends. I missed her so much and I was hungry we didn’t have any food there. I was more emotional.’

Achievement: Swash won season eight of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! in 2008

I don’t mind: The actor and presenter admits he let his emotions run free while taking part in the South African spin-off

True love: Swash says his fiancee Stacey Solomon pushed him to take part in the South African series because “she knew how much it meant to him”.
After reuniting with his family after pre-tapping for the spin-off last October, Swash now plans to return Solomon’s declaration of love by getting her name tattooed on his body.
He said: “You know how Stacey is. She’s going to want to hit me on the forehead or something.’ I was so touched by that.’
The actor also admits they will be thinking about having another baby after giving birth to daughter Belle, their third child together, last year.
“There aren’t a lot of one-on-ones at the moment, but that’s part of having a young family,” he added. “But we’re so lucky.” We’ve got to give this about a year or so.’
At the time of filming I’m A Celebrity… South Africa, Solomon was pregnant with their youngest daughter, who is now three months old.
The pair also share Rose, 16 months, and Rex, two.
Swash is stepdad to Solomon’s sons Zach, 15, and Leighton, 9, from previous relationships, and has a son, Harry, 15, with his ex, Emma Sophocleous.
