A 28-year-old mother in Alabama denies killing her 15-month-old son, who died of brutal head trauma two years ago. Jordan Ellan Harmon, who flashed an ear-to-ear smile as she posed for her mugshot after her 2021 arrest, last week officially pleaded not guilty to one count each of murder, aggravated child abuse and chemical endangerment of a child in April 2021 Murder of young Emery Michael Knox Wilson, authorities confirmed to Law&Crime.
Travius Sebastian Coleman, 30, who was Harmon’s boyfriend at the time of Emery’s death, is facing the same spate of charges as well as an additional charge of aggravated child molestation.
According to a press release from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to an incident at the intersection of Highway 24 and County Road 214 on April 11, 2021. Upon arriving at the scene, first responders found a person performing CPR on an infant the floor panel of a minivan. An ambulance was dispatched to the scene and the infant was taken to Decatur-Morgan Hospital. Due to the severity of the child’s injuries, he was later taken to the Children’s of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham for more specialized treatment.
On April 12, 2021, a then 26-year-old Harmon was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated child molestation. She was booked into the Lawrence County Jail on $60,000 bail. Unfortunately, 15-month-old Emery was pronounced dead the day after his mother was arrested.
After about five months in prison, Harmon was released on September 17, 2021 after posting $60,000 bail.
It wasn’t until the autopsy report came back in January 2022 with critical information about the case — including the cause of death and the extent of the toddler’s injuries — that Harmon and Coleman were brought back in for questioning.
Lawrence County Sheriff Max Sanders said the report showed the toddler died from blunt force trauma to the head. The autopsy also revealed that the toddler had abrasions, bruises and lacerations to the scalp, a depressed skull fracture, and a fractured left forearm. In addition, toxicological tests revealed the presence of cannabinoids in the baby’s system.
After an interview with investigators on Jan. 25, 2022, Coleman was arrested and sent to jail, the sheriff’s office said.
Harmon was questioned about the conclusions of Emery’s autopsy report on January 26, 2022. As a result of her responses, she was taken into custody a second time and charged with the abuse and death of her son.
According to a report by Huntsville CBS affiliate WHNT-TV, a Lawrence County grand jury last month indicted Harmon and Coleman on the above charges.
Court documents obtained by the station reportedly accuse the couple of “shaking, hitting, hitting, or otherwise seriously injuring” Emery “on more than one occasion.” They also say Harmon and Coleman “tortured, intentionally abused, cruelly beat, or otherwise intentionally abused” the toddler.
In addition, Harmon was charged with refusing to seek medical attention for a child who “had sustained serious injuries requiring medical attention and treatment, including but not limited to injuries to the head, arm and groin at a minimum.” three separate occasions,” per WHNT.
Both suspects are currently in prison on similar bonds totaling $1,680,000.
