Josephine Victoria “Joy” Behar is an American comedian, television host, actress, and author. She is the co-host of the ABC talk show The View, on which she is the only original panelist who still appears regularly. As an actress, Joy is known for playing roles in films such as Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012), Hall Pass (2011) and Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993).

Joy was born and raised in New York City, USA. She attended Queens College in 1964, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in sociology, and later continued her studies at Stony Brook University, where she received a master’s degree in English education. From the 1960s through the early 1970s, Behar taught Long Island English at Lindenhurst Senior High School in Lindenhurst, New York. She previously studied acting at HB Studio.

Behar began her show business career as a receptionist on ABC’s Good Morning America and then as a producer. She was also a stand-up comedian, appearing on ABC’s Good Morning America and The New Show, a short-lived NBC project created by Lorne Michaels. Her popularity prompted her to start her own talk show on Lifetime Television, Way Off Broadway. Additionally, her career took a new direction when she played the role of Helga Von Haupt on the hit NBC sitcom Baby Boom. Joy has also appeared in other films such as My Life, Woody Allen’s and Manhattan Murder Mystery. She also hosted a talk show on Radio 77 WABC in New York City.

In addition, Joy appeared in the HBO comedy specials One Night Stand and Women of the Night 2. She joined the ABC talk show The View in 1997. Behar was one of the original panelists. In 2009, Behar and fellow co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri Shepherd, and Walters won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show. Aside from that, Behar has also published her first book, Joy Shtick: Or What Is the Existential Vacuum and Does It Come with Attachments, by Eliot Spitzer, as of July 2012.

Additionally, Joy portrayed the role of Dr. Lucy in the 2011 comedy Hall Pass. She also appeared in Woody Allen’s Amazon series Crisis in Six Scenes. Her final show was on August 9, 2013, during which the program staged a This Is Your Life-style tribute to Behar. She returned to ABC to co-host a new show, which premiered in September 2015. She previously appeared on Bravo’s Celebrity Poker Showdown Season 8 and placed fourth behind Robin Tunney and Christopher Meloni. She played for the US fund for UNIC. On October 27, 2017, Behar made a guest appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher. Her most recent book, The Great Gasbag: An AZ Study Guide to Surviving Trump World, was published the same year.
