Ever since bursting into the limelight, Princess Catherine has proven she can rock an extremely diverse palette of colors. And while Marie Claire has noted that the princess rarely wears orange, she’s certainly no stranger to wearing red. She did just that in June 2012, when she arrived at Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee in a bright red Alexander McQueen dress and matching hat. When choosing her outfit, Catherine was probably unaware it was a risk – but an article later published by The Daily Mail suggested it was a bold move.
The event, which saw the royal family float down the Thames on the royal barge, was an impressive celebration of the Queen. Because of that, the author of this article suggested, “If there was ever an occasion where Kate should have gone for a more subdued look, this certainly was it.” They continued, “Yes, she looked stunning. But with the Queen, less is definitely more.” And when the Queen and Queen consort Camilla opted for white and cream outfits respectively, Catherine stood out even more.
However, critics were quick to shut down the article. Fans of Catherine expressed their support for her outfit and one wrote: “Kate’s red went really well with the Queen’s crisp white. It seemed to me that Camilla was the weirdo and could have tried blue.”
