King Charles was “deeply touched” by the celebration of his coronation.
The 74-year-old monarch, who was crowned with his wife Camilla, 75, at Westminster Abbey in London on Saturday (06/05/23) has now issued a statement paying tribute to royal fans for their support.
He said hours before his coronation concert Sunday (07/05/23) via a Buckingham Palace spokesman that he and the new Queen were “deeply touched by yesterday’s events”.
The statement added: “Their Majesties were deeply touched by yesterday’s events and deeply grateful both to everyone who helped make it such a glorious occasion – and to the very many who, in London and at such great number have shown their support further out there.”
More than 18 million Brits tuned in to see Charles and Camilla officially crowned king and queen at the nation’s biggest ceremonial event in 70 years. Highlights included the anointing of the king with oil behind a screen after he was stripped of his royal robes except for a white shirt.
The royals paid tribute as thousands of street parties were in full swing across the UK, with an estimated 3,700 lunchtime events taking place on Sunday alone.
Charles and Camilla will watch world famous acts from around the world including Katy Perry, 38, Lionel Richie, 73, and Take That perform at the Coronation Concert tonight, which will be broadcast from 8pm from the East Lawn of Windsor Castle in London.
Millions are expected to tune in to BBC Radio 2 and TV coverage of the event, which will also feature singers Paloma Faith, 41, Olly Murs, 38, and Nicole Scherzinger, 44, performing in celebration of the king.
It will last two hours and although tickets are not available, screens across the UK will be broadcasting it live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds, while viewers in the US can watch via cable.
