When Tigger’s owners handed him over to the care of the Dumb Friends League in April 2022, the eight-year-old pup was following the standard path that most animals follow when they arrive at one of the DFL’s animal shelters. At first, the recording crew welcomed Tigger with open arms, showing affection and documenting known details about his story. Soon after, they referred him to the league’s Shelter Veterinary Services (SVS) team, who assessed his general health, ran blood tests, and developed an appropriate treatment plan for his hypothyroidism. Next, he received comfort and nourishment from the Animal Care team at his new, temporary home. Finally, the adoption and behavioral support teams identified and documented Tigger’s individual needs that would require support and consideration if placed with a loving family.
He was already the favorite of volunteer dog walkers in the summer and had gotten used to gentle head pats and personal greetings from passers-by on his daily walks. Four months later, when the leaves began to turn and fall, Tigger was practically a celebrity around here. He touched hearts and brightened countless days. His kennel was covered in colorful, loving drawings and “Adopt Me” messages from the League’s dedicated Humane Education students. He even appeared on live TV and rose up social media hoping that the right person would see him in all his handsome good boy glory.
Despite his wonderful nature, Tigger unfortunately (and inexplicably) continued to be one of our “long-term residents”. But little did he know that Adrienne and Tammy fell more and more in love with him every time he graced their screens on the league’s website and social media platforms.
Adrienne had recently lost her 16 year old Golden Retriever and as her broken heart began to heal, she regularly checked our website for furry friends who were also looking for a companion. For months, Tigger’s familiar face stared at her. Adrienne tells us it was a TikTok video about Tigger’s daily routine that finally did the trick. She agreed to take him home that same day. Her partner Tammy encouraged her to wait until the weekend, assuring Adrienne that if it was to be, it would be.
It should be like this.
On a chilly October day, Tigger met his new parents, and according to Adrienne, it was love at first sight. After successful adoption counseling and many tearful goodbyes from his “league” of admirers, Tigger was finally on his way home – driving ahead in the car, surrounded by love. Entering his new home, he jumped onto the couch and made himself comfortable; he had plenty of time to catch up. It didn’t take Tigger long to learn the word “cuddle,” and as it turns out, he never turns down an opportunity to do just that.
These days, Tigger sleeps in bed every night, where he often pushes one of his bedfellows out of bed due to his large limbs and spectacular ability to spread and fully relax. Adrienne and Tammy are happy to oblige. When Tigger was unable to go upstairs to the bedroom following a recent surgical procedure, the two moved just to be near him. For a full two weeks, the couple snoozed on sleeping bags and pads on the floor so Tigger could still have his beloved snuggles when he needed them most.
When Tigger isn’t snuggling with his parents, he can be found at the vet’s office, where he has a reputation for being their “part-time office dog.” There he receives care and attention, models the latest dog fashion trends and refreshes his pop culture. According to Tammy, Tigger is at his calmest when he’s listening to Taylor Swift, and who can really blame him?
“He’s the perfect dog,” Tammy said in admiration.
