Mississippi babysitter beats children, kills 2-year-old and seriously injures baby: Police – Crime Online

A Mississippi babysitter could face the death penalty for allegedly murdering a toddler and molesting his younger sister, the Daily Journal reports.

This week, an Alcorn County grand jury voted to indict 23-year-old Makallie E. Durham on four counts of child molestation stemming from an incident in September that left a 2-year-old boy and an 11-month-old girl dead seriously injured.

Earlier this week, Durham had already been indicted on one count of capital murder and another count of child molestation.

Authorities allege Durham intentionally punched the two victims in the face or on the head between September 9 and 12. Court documents seen by the newspaper allege Durham beat the children for several days.

Paramedics were called to a home in Corinth, Mississippi, around 9 p.m. on September 13 to report an unresponsive child. Officers at the scene found the 2-year-old boy with bruises and spots on his body and he was taken to a regional hospital, according to ABC 24.

Emergency services also found the 11-month-old girl and believed she had sustained multiple injuries that were not publicly described. The girl was also transported to the regional hospital before both victims were taken to a children’s hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, about 100 miles away.

Police found Durham watching the children and arrested them on a pending warrant, according to the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office.

The boy died two days later, prompting murder charges, to which she pleaded not guilty.

Durham faces life imprisonment or the death penalty if convicted.
