New Jedi Order Movie Announced, Rey Returns

Predicting further narrative details about Star Wars: New Jedi Order beyond its basic Rey-focused premise is a complete shot in the dark at the moment. However, if there’s one source material that the film has a good chance of drawing on, it’s one particular Star Wars book series buried deep in the history of the franchise.

The similarly titled Star Wars: The New Jedi Order is a series of 19 full-length novels set in the Star Wars universe, all published between the years 1999 and 2003. These books were set more than two decades after the events of “Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi” and chronicled the rise of a new Jedi order led by Luke Skywalker. Interestingly, these books were originally canon for the films and even included some major deaths for longtime characters like Chewbacca. However, they were erased from the timeline when Disney performed its soft reboot of the “Star Wars” story.

Of course, Star Wars: The New Jedi Order and the film Star Wars: New Jedi Order take place with different main characters at very different chronological points in the universe, but there are still some parallels in their basic narrative cores. Avid viewers will have to see if the new project ends up drawing something from this fascinating period of Star Wars history as more details unfold.
