“Nothing New in the West” has already won eight awards at the German Film Awards. Actor Albrecht Schuch received the Lola as best male supporting actor. But it also became critical.

The anti-war film “Nothing New in the West” has already received eight German television awards. The film won in the categories Sound Design, Camera, Make-Up, Film Music, Production Design, Visual Effects and Best Male Supporting Role and Male Lead. The event is still ongoing.

Schlöndorff awarded honorary prize

Director Volker Schlöndorff (“The Tin Drum”) was honored for outstanding services to German film. The German Film Academy awarded the 84-year-old the honorary award. Hollywood star John Malkovich paid tribute to his work in a video speech, and other filmmakers such as Nina Hoss and Katharina Thalbach also congratulated him.

Leonie Benesch was awarded best leading actress for her role in “Das Lehrerzimmer”. Other prizes went to Gesa Jäger for best editing for “Das Lehrerzimmer” and to Tanja Hausner in the category of best costume design in the film “Sisi & Ich”. Jördis Triebel received the Lola for the best female supporting role for her performance in “In a country that no longer exists!”.

The German Film Prize is one of the most important awards in the industry. The nominations and awards are endowed with a total of around three million euros for new projects. Around 1,600 guests were invited to the award ceremony in the theater on Potsdamer Platz. The evening was moderated by Jasmin Shakeri.

Roth draws attention to grievances

But there was also room for serious topics: Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth called for an open discussion of abuses in the industry at the celebration in Berlin. The Greens politician said: “We are also here to clearly name problems: dependencies, abuse of power, physical assaults, sexualized violence on the set.”

Roth wants to reform film funding
