“Nothing New in the West” has already won eight awards at the German Film Awards. Actor Albrecht Schuch received the Lola as best male supporting actor. But it also became critical.

The anti-war film “Nothing New in the West” has already received eight German television awards. The film won in the categories Sound Design, Camera, Make-Up, Film Music, Production Design, Visual Effects and Best Male Supporting Role and Male Lead. The event is still ongoing.

Felix Kammerer was honored as the best leading actor. He got the Lola for his performance in “Nothing New in the West”.

Albrecht Schuch received the Lola for the best acting performance in a supporting role. Schuch has already won four Lolas in the course of his career: Last year he was honored for his role in the drama “Lieber Thomas”, in 2020 he won two trophies for “Systemsprenger” and “Berlin Alexanderplatz”.

Schlöndorff awarded honorary prize

Director Volker Schlöndorff (“The Tin Drum”) was honored for outstanding services to German film. The German Film Academy awarded the 84-year-old the honorary award. Hollywood star John Malkovich paid tribute to his work in a video speech, and other filmmakers such as Nina Hoss and Katharina Thalbach also congratulated him.

Leonie Benesch Best leading lady

Leonie Benesch was awarded best leading actress for her role in “Das Lehrerzimmer”. She plays a teacher who wants to solve a series of thefts and therefore decides to secretly run a camera in the teachers’ room. Ilker Çatak received the Lola in the category Best Director – also for “The Classroom”.

Other prizes went to Gesa Jäger for best editing for “Das Lehrerzimmer” and to Tanja Hausner in the category of best costume design in the film “Sisi & Ich”. Jördis Triebel received the Lola for the best female supporting role for her performance in “In a country that no longer exists!”.

The German Film Prize is one of the most important awards in the industry. The nominations and awards are endowed with a total of around three million euros for new projects. Around 1,600 guests were invited to the award ceremony in the theater on Potsdamer Platz. The evening was moderated by Jasmin Shakeri.

Roth draws attention to grievances

But there was also room for serious topics: Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth called for an open discussion of abuses in the industry at the celebration in Berlin. The Greens politician said: “We are also here to clearly name problems: dependencies, abuse of power, physical assaults, sexualized violence on the set.”

Roth announces reformation of film demands

Anyone who openly criticizes these abuses, “whoever demands that they be stopped and ostracized as a polluter” – can count on their support. It needs an honest and open discussion.

It must be possible to talk about what is going wrong and what can be improved, about what structures need to be changed so that a film set is a place where films are made in a good, creative and constructive working atmosphere. What stands in the way, they could change together, said Roth.

Roth wants to reform film funding
