Only seven professionals! Decimated Hamburg Towers are running out of breath in the season finale

Not much was at stake for the already secured Veolia Towers Hamburg on the last BBL matchday. In Braunschweig, who also managed to stay up in the league during the week, the towers still showed an appealing performance – but it wasn’t enough to win. With 78:88 (21:21, 49:37, 61:60) the Hamburg lost to the lions. In the last few minutes, the badly decimated guests ran out of air.

The Towers could never complain about a lack of support during their disappointing season. There was also impressive support on the last day of the game – 150 Hamburg supporters made the pilgrimage to Braunschweig to support their team. And the towers could use any kind of support. Because head coach Benka Barloschky once again had to make do with a skeleton squad.

With Christoph Philipps (fracture in his left hand) and Anthony Polite, who was not ready for action again due to a cold, two key players were out at short notice. Only seven professionals and Linus Hoffmann from the cooperation partner Rist Wedel could take part. Encouraged by the atmosphere in Braunschweig, Wilhelmsburg still managed to take a high lead (+12) in the second quarter, which they gave up immediately after half-time.

With a 19:3 run, the Lower Saxony turned the game. During a break, Barloschky then appealed to the honor of his protégés. His words should not fail to have their effect. The Towers held back again, so that an exciting final phase should develop. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the lead changed every minute. But in the final moments, the guests ran out of breath. “We’ve been struggling with a short rotation all season,” said Lukas Meisner, who was “extremely proud of the team” given the circumstances.

Ziga Samar (ten points and twelve assists) could not reward himself for his strong performance. Ryan Taylor (17 points) became the best pitcher at the Towers. Jonas Wohlfarth-Bottermann also played well, scoring 15 points in 17 minutes. Due to the bankruptcy, the towers have slipped down the table – they end the season in 15th place.
