Patrick Lyoya was killed by a Grand Rapids, Michigan police officer named Christopher Schurr during a traffic stop in 2022. After a brief struggle, Schurr had overpowered Lyoya, but still felt it necessary to draw his service pistol and shoot him in the back of the head. As usual, this horrific incident was caught on camera in front of the whole world. As a result, Schurr was charged with second-degree manslaughter. Since then, very little has been heard about Patrick Lyoya and his parents are fed up with it.
According to MLive, the family recently gathered at his grave site to renew their call for justice and to alert local authorities that they will not go into the night quietly…
“We must find justice for Patrick. Everyone knows how Patrick’s life was taken and today they are doing everything they can to drop the case,” Patrick Lyoya’s father, Peter Lyoya, said through interpreter Israel Siku.
“I ask everyone to stand up, really stand up with might and main to get justice for Patrick.”
The May 13 gathering comes just one month after the one-year anniversary of Patrick’s death at the hands of Schurr on April 4, 2022. The ubiquitous civil rights attorney Ben Crump and his co-attorney Ven Johnson are representing the family in a $100 million lawsuit against the city and Schurr personally. The former police officer will appear in court from October 24 after his defense lawyers managed to delay the start of the trial from the originally planned date last March.
We will be keeping an eye on this case and will update you with the details in real time.
