The 29-year-old ‘Little Mix’ star battled insecurities about her appearance for years and her worries grew over being attacked by bullies who made her life miserable – and Perrie admits she wanted to take drastic action to change yourself.
She told Grazia magazine: “When I was younger I was a little bit insecure, I hated my freckles, I was always pretty sick and anemic so I had dark circles under my eyes, I was really malnourished and thin, and I had a big scar on my stomach from surgeries.
“I just hated everything. People used to bully me and I think that was something I internalized. Everyone criticized me and that made me criticize myself. I asked my mom if I could have an acid peel to get rid of my freckles.”
However, Perrie eventually learned to love her looks, and she believes that confidence is something that comes with getting older.
She added, “I think confidence and self-empowerment comes with age, you learn not to care what other people think.”
Perrie previously opened up about being bullied about her freckles in an interview on British TV show Lorraine in 2018 and admitted it took her a long time to embrace her natural beauty.
She said: “As I’ve gotten older, they have [freckles] came out in the sun but when I was younger they were there all the time and I remember being called “freckle face” and everyone criticizing them.
“Everyone has their own insecurities and I think that’s why as a band we want to teach our fans that being yourself is enough. Accept your insecurities because that is what makes you different and unique.”
