Peter Madrigal Reveals How Different SUR Was Before Vanderpump Rules
Madrigal, one of the original actors of Vanderpump Rules and a long-time employee of SUR, recently gave a glimpse of the restaurant prior to the start of the broadcast. During an appearance on Kristen Doute’s “Sex, Love, and What Else Matters” podcast, Madrigal revealed that he started working at SUR in 2008 right after graduating from USC. That was a few years ago VPR started.
According to Madrigal, SUR was a much smaller operation at the time, with only about 12 employees. Doute, who worked at the restaurant for eight years, confirmed this, saying it’s a much smaller and more intimate setting. The two also revealed that SUR did not hold an alcohol license at the time and was therefore only allowed to serve beer and wine.
Madrigal also spoke about Doute being among the first people he met at the restaurant. Doute joined SUR in 2007 and as a result had a better understanding of the operation of the restaurant. According to Madrigal, Doute taught him a lot, from folding napkins to wearing glasses.

As the first season of Vanderpump Rules came out in 2013, all the main cast except Tom Schwartz worked at SUR. That made perfect sense as the show focused on a group of handsome twenty-somethings dealing with the drama that comes with working together at a West Hollywood restaurant.
Lisa Vanderpump once told Thrillist, “Part of the deal is that if they work at the restaurant on the show, they have to legally work there.”
Today are the most VPR The actors are so successful that they no longer have to work at SUR. In fact, Madrigal is the only original cast member who continues to work at the restaurant.
