International sales of exported petroleum gas from all countries totaled US$374.6 billion in 2021.

The overall value of petroleum gas exports rose by an average 54.5% for all exporting countries since 2017 when petroleum gas shipments were valued at $242.5 billion. From 2020 to 2021, petroleum gas exported worldwide appreciated by 65.1%.

The 5 biggest exporters of petroleum gas in 2021 (United States of America, Norway, Australia, Qatar and Canada) sold almost three-fifths (57.9%) of globally shipped petroleum gas.

About one-fifth (20.3%) of worldwide petroleum gas exports were supplied by member countries of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries compared to roughly one-third during 2020. OPEC is an intergovernmental entity comprised of 13 countries.

Switching to a continental perspective, countries in Europe sold the highest dollar worth of exported petroleum gas during 2021 with shipments valued at $108.7 billion or 29% of the global total. Slowing to second place for 2021 were Asian exporters (including the Middle East) collecting a 27.1% share. Shippers in North America supplied another 22.1% while Oceania led by Australia and Papua New Guinea accounted for 11.4%.

Smaller percentages came from Africa (8.3%) and Latin America (2%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.

For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix is 2711 for petroleum gas and other gaseous hydrocarbons.

Below are the 15 countries that exported the highest dollar value worth of petroleum gas during 2021.

One top supplier country posted a decline in its global petroleum gas sales namely the United Arab Emirates thanks to its -50.8% slowdown.

Export Countries Enjoying Greatest Trade Surpluses for Petroleum Gas

The following countries posted the highest positive net exports for petroleum gas during 2021. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the surplus between the value of each country’s exported petroleum gas and its import purchases for that same commodity.

  1. Norway: US$57.9 billion (net export surplus up 323% since 2020)
  2. United States of America: $53.3 billion (up 107.9%)

Overtaking Qatar, Norway generated the highest surplus in the international trade of petroleum gas in 2021. In turn, this positive cashflow confirms Norway’s leading competitive advantage for this specific product category.

Export Countries Incurring Biggest Trade Deficits for Petroleum Gas

The following countries posted the highest negative net exports for petroleum gas during 2021. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the deficit between the value of each country’s imported petroleum gas purchases and its exports for that same commodity.

  1. Mainland China: -US$59.7 billion (net export deficit up 49.2% since 2020)
  2. Japan: -$45.6 billion (up 33.7%)
