PGR prepares book with ‘balance sheet’ of Aras management in the pandemic – 07/17/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) is preparing, for next month, the launch of a book that will unravel the performance of the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) in the Covid-19 pandemic, under the management of Augusto Aras.

Entitled “The Legal Order in Combating Covid: The Performance of the MPF”, the volume will focus on the work carried out by the Integrated Cabinet for Monitoring the Covid-19 Epidemic, the Giac, created by determination of the Attorney General of the Republic in 2020.

The book should be divided into three parts —extrajudicial action, judicial action and administrative action— and have sections dedicated to “emblematic actions”, the delivery of the Covid CPI report to Aras and the “political reaction to the filings” of inquiries promoted by the PGR.

The work will be made available to the public on the eve of the end of Aras’ term, at a time when the PGR has redoubled its efforts to reject accusations of omission during the health crisis and alignment with then-president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

As shown to Sheet, the Attorney General of the Republic has, in recent weeks, taken up the discourse that the body was diligent in overseeing administrative acts and public spending aimed at combating the pandemic. Episodes like the lack of oxygen crisis in Manaus hospitals are remembered by him.

With these gestures, the PGR seeks to gain a foothold alongside President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in order to have a say in the choice of his successor —or even to be reappointed to office. In a recent interview with TV Record, the petista did not rule out this possibility.

Scheduled for August, the book “The Legal Order in Combating Covid” is coordinated by the Deputy Attorney General of the Republic Celia Regina Souza Delgado Alvarenga, responsible for the GIAC, and by the president of the Health Commission of the National Council of the Public Ministry (CNMP), Sandra Krieger. The volume will cover the work done by more than 150 prosecutors across the country during the crisis.
