Premier League explains WHY Cody Gakpo’s Liverpool equalizer against Aston Villa was disallowed

The Premier League has revealed the reason for the decision not to recognize Cody Gakpo’s equalizer for Liverpool in Saturday’s Premier League clash with Aston Villa.

Jacob Ramey had put the visitors ahead in the 27th minute before Dutch striker Gakpo appeared to put the Reds back on par, but the video referee allowed the goal.

Roberto Firmino later equalized for the hosts in his last game at Anfield wearing a Liverpool shirt after it was confirmed he would leave the club at the end of the season.

The Premier League explained why Gakpo’s goal was ruled out, releasing a statement which read: “Virgil Van Dijk was found offside after Luis Diaz’s header.”

“The VAR recommended a review and referee John Brooks concluded it was a distraction from Enzri Konsa and not a deliberate play.”

With the hosts watching, Luis Diaz headed a ball back across the box from the right, but the defender blocked it.

The ball then found its way to Virgil van Dijk, who stood at the left back post and passed it to his partner in defence, Ibrahima Konate, who played the ball from the edge of the box.

However, the Dutch centre-back was in an offside position when the ball fell from Diaz for the first time.

French star Konate’s shot deflected off the line only for Gakpo, under intense pressure, to touch the ball and finish from close range.

Brazilian striker Firmino scored the late equalizer in the 89th minute, securing a crucial point for the Reds in the fight for Champions League qualification.

Liverpool are now fifth in the Premier League table with a game to go, three points behind Newcastle and Manchester United in third and fourth.

However, United, who secured a narrow 1-0 win at Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon, have two games left. As is Newcastle, who don’t play until Monday when they host Leicester.

Liverpool now face an uphill battle to qualify for the Champions League, although they believe their last game, away at relegated Southampton, is quite winnable.
