Railway minister has ordered 'high-level inquiry' into Odisha train crash

Authorities were focused on moving the injured to nearby hospitals, Ralway’s minister said.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said Saturday that he had ordered a high-level inquiry into the Coromandel Express derailment at Odishas Balasore late Friday night.

Speaking to ANI about the incident, Ashwini Vaishnaw said the accident was unfortunate and the rescue operation began shortly after news of the incident reached his ministry.

He said the inquiry was ordered to find out what caused the passenger carriages to derail.

“I ordered a high-level probe to find out what caused this derailment. It is important to get to the bottom of the cause of this tragic accident,” said the railway minister.

Ashwini Vaishnaw further explained that troops from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRF) and local authorities have been mobilized to rescue and assist at the scene of the horrific derailment.

Ashwini Vaishnaw said: “We have announced a voluntary payment of Rs. 10 lakh rupees each to the family members of the deceased, 2 lakh rupees each for seriously injured passengers and 50,000 rupees for passengers with minor injuries.”

The minister added that authorities are focused on moving the injured to nearby hospitals as soon as possible and that the number of dead and injured in the derailment is still being determined.

He further announced that special bus and train connections would be organized for family members of the derailment victims.

“We have already conveyed the news of the deaths to the bereaved and family members after receiving their contacts,” the minister added.
