Illinois authorities have identified decomposed remains found in a locked storage unit belonging to a former small-town police chief last fall, but it’s unclear what, if anything, will happen to the woman accused of covering up his death.
Marcy Oglesby, 50, was charged in February on multiple counts in connection with the death of Richard Young, 71, with whom she was reportedly in a relationship, according to KWQC. But earlier this month a judge dropped several of the charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault by the administration of dangerous substances and concealment of a murder, after her attorney argued the charges violated her right to a speedy trial.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, Young’s body — unidentified at the time — was found in a Maquon storage unit last October when Knox County deputies were called to investigate a suspicious odor emanating from the unit. Oglesby met the MPs and facilities management and unlocked the unit, telling them the smell was from a possum that had died inside.
But when MPs asked what was inside a large box, Oglesby told them it was a human body. She was immediately arrested for hiding a body.
In February, however, investigators increased the charges and identified the deceased as Young, a former police chief of the village of Maquon. They accused Oglesby of putting high doses of eye drops in his food and drink, KWQC said.
Outside of the trial, officials had not identified Young as a victim. According to CBS News, DNA test results came in this week with the confirmation.
Prison records show Oglesby remains behind bars, charged with two counts of forgery, two counts of possession of a firearm without the required identification of the firearm owner and one count of covering up a death, according to KWQC. A pre-trial conference on these allegations is scheduled for March 3.
Prosecutors have announced they will appeal the March 16 verdict, which will drop the other charges.
