A project by a school in Salzgitter impressed the jury at the federal competition “Democratic Action”. It was about the cover sheet of the school planner.
As an outstanding democracy project the national competition “Acting Democratically” has the project “Choice of the Cover Sheet for the School Planner” of the Salzgitter employees Elementary School Am Ostertal excellent. As the school reports, it has been holding a democratic election for the cover of the annual school planner since the 2021-22 school year. All 400 primary school students receive the planner. You can help shape this yourself.
The project works as follows: First, all the children who want to take part design their own cover sheet. However, there is one requirement: the mascot of the school must be visible on it. Then, in social training, the students choose the most beautiful picture in the class. Then each year chooses the most beautiful of the year from the “best in class” pictures. Finally, the big election follows with the entire student body in the polling station.

In the future, parents will also be invited to contribute with a page in the school planner – election posters, ballot papers and polling stations will also be used for this. By the cover sheetproject, the children experience self-efficacy and the school community is strengthened, according to the school’s statement.
The jury of national competition selected the project as one of 50 exemplary. A total of almost 14,000 people took part in the competition with 263 democracy projects. The winners go to the Junify Democracy Festival in Berlin. According to the announcement, there will also be prizes in cash and in kind.
For more than 30 years, according to the announcement, projects by young people all over Germany honored, who make a contribution to democratic coexistence. The Conference of Ministers of Education also recommends the competition.
