It was difficult for Indian professionals to find work in their home country. Sangita’s family strongly supported Tanzanian Independence, and her father, a lawyer, actively worked towards it. He and his colleagues helped deracialize the British criminal code after independence, which had been against indigenous Africans.
Sangita’s father served in the Tanzanian government while her mother was a homemaker. However, the family relocated to the UK in the 1970s. Sangita’s mother is the hero of their story in England. She was beautiful inside and out, but her father didn’t prioritize her education, and she had no formal schooling after the age of 12 or 13. Her mother was thrilled to be in England, where she considered herself free. She was able to work for the first time, pay for her own English lessons, and study at night for her O-levels while raising three children.
Sangita grew up in hardship alongside her two siblings. Her mother worked various jobs to provide for the family, including selling jewelry door-to-door in central London, stacking shelves, clerical work, and even becoming a part-time benefits officer working alone on one of the toughest estates in London. Her father, on the other hand, struggled with family life, and leaving Africa broke his heart. He never fully recovered.
