Actress Sharon Stone was excited to be cast in a project about the late Lana Turner. But when Michael Douglas’ wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, snapped up the project instead, Stone couldn’t help but express her disappointment with the outcome.
Sharon Stone was set to play late actress Lana Turner in a biopic

Stone may once have been in the running to play the late actress Lana Turner. According to TCM, Turner was an aspiring actress in her late ’30s after making her small screen debut in the feature film You will not be forgotten.
From there, Turner’s career enjoyed even greater heights in the ’40s. In the 1940s she acted in notable films such as Honky tonk And dr Jekyll and Mr Hydefurther growing her fame.
By the ’40s and ’50s, Turner was already an established star and an A-lister in her own right. But her personal life was to take a disastrous turn when she began dating a Los Angeles mobster named Johnny Stompanato. Stompanato was a secret admirer of Turner, secretly sending her lavish gifts and love messages over the phone under the alias John Steele.
When Turner found out who Stompanato really was, she tried to leave him. But Stompanato wouldn’t let her, using force and intimidation to keep Turner under her control.
After months of this tumultuous relationship, the couple reached their breaking point. Stompanato threatened to kill Turner, Turner’s grandmother, and Turner’s daughter, Cheryl Crane. Upon hearing this, Turner’s daughter, who was only 14 at the time, stabbed Stompanato with a knife, killing him. Due to the circumstances, neither Turner nor Crane have been charged with murder.
Sharon Stone lost her role as Lana Turner to Catherine Zeta-Jones, wife of Michael Douglas
Stone claimed that she was chosen by Turner himself to play Lana Turner.
“I met Lana in her last years and I really liked her. She said if her life was going to be made into a movie I would be her choice,” Stone once said, according to FemaleFirst.
In the mid-2000s, a Turner film wanted to become a reality. Entertainment Weekly reported in 2001 Wayne’s world Director Wayne Wang was set to helm the potential feature film. Wayne had already planned to cast Stone as Turner at this point. Wang also considered Antonio Banderas for the role of Johnny Stompanato.
“I told him, ‘You need to get rid of your Spanish accent. Johnny was a Midwestern gangster,” Wang said.
But circumstances changed when filmmaker Adrian Lyne was hired to direct the hypothetical film instead. Lyne decided to cast Michael Douglas’ wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, in the film. It’s been reported that Stone wasn’t too happy about being left out of one of her dream projects.
“You may know your job, but it seems like you have to be flavor of the week,” Stone reportedly said in reference to the casting news.
How Catherine Zeta-Jones felt about Sharon Stone being mad at her for being cast in the role
In an interview with IGN in 2005, Zeta-Jones confirmed that she was cast in a potential Lana Turner biopic. Instead of Antonio Banderas, matrix Star Keanu Reeves would end up being her love interest.
“I will do it. Keanu Reeves is still on. I filmed myself just so I could pretend the studio didn’t turn around halfway through the film and say, ‘She doesn’t look like her,'” said Zeta-Jones.
However, when it came to Stone, Zeta-Jones claimed that she knew very little about the actor’s true feelings on the matter. But Zeta-Jones shared that she also wanted to star in a movie, which a while ago went to Stone instead. So Zeta-Jones knew the feeling of being tied up.
“Supposedly Sharon wanted to play Lana Turner [in the Johnny Stompanato movie]. And I know Sharon really well. And I do not know. But guess what? I wanted to be there basic instinct 2‘ said Zeta Jones.
